    Original price was: $ 327.00.Current price is: $ 275.00.

Corneal Dystrophies (Developments in Ophthalmology) 1st Edition

Corneal dystrophies (CD) are bilateral hereditary disorders of the cornea in which one or several parts of the cornea lose their transparency. As the dystrophy can start in different layers of the cornea, they are classified accordingly as epithelial dystrophies, stromal dystrophies and endothelial dystrophies. This volume includes a description of the new international IC3D classification of CD reflecting what we currently know of the clinical, pathological, and genetic aspects of these disorders. Further contributions give an insight into differential diagnostics and histology, which can confirm the diagnosis as for instance in granular CD type 2, as well as DNA analysis of CD providing additional information about the pathogenesis. Also, procedures such as the phototherapeutic keratectomy with the excimer laser, the new modalities of lamellar keratoplasty, and penetrating keratoplasty are described. This publication holds a wealth of new and topical information on CD for ophthalmologists and geneticists alike.

Genetics in Ophthalmology (Developments in Ophthalmology) 1st Edition

The objective of this publication is to enhance mutual understanding and communication between ophthalmologists, molecular geneticists, genetic counselors and biomedical researchers. In the introductory chapter, current genetic paradigms and experimental genetic approaches relevant to the nature of hereditary disorders are discussed. The following contribution on the epidemiology of hereditary ocular disorders provides an excellent reference to geneticists as well as clinicians. Myopia is presented as an example of a complex clinical phenotype where genes and environment interact. Further molecular ophthalmogenetic topics, such as corneal dystrophies, cataract, glaucoma, opticus neuropathy, non-syndromic and syndromic pigmentary retinopathies, defects of vitamin A metabolism and macular dystrophies including age-related macular degeneration, are investigated in depth. The volume concludes with a survey of color vision deficiencies, a discussion of animal models and gene therapy, and a useful description of technical devices supporting patients who are losing sight.

Adequate Hla Matching in Keratoplasty (Developments in Ophthalmology) 1st Edition

    Original price was: $ 158.00.Current price is: $ 118.00.

Adequate Hla Matching in Keratoplasty (Developments in Ophthalmology) 1st Edition

`Immunologic privilege' of the cornea and anterior chamber has, in most cases, been believed to be a sufficient guarantee for survival of the donor cornea. If this failed, it was thought that adjunctive immunomodulating agents would compensate. But the question of how to care for better tolerance and safer long-term survival of corneal grafts after withdrawal of a potent immunomodulating shield still remained unanswered. The answer is human leukocyte antigens (HLA) matching. In this volume, immunological and clinical aspects are discussed by renowned clinical and experimental immunologists as well as experienced keratoplasty surgeons. These experts conclude that HLA matching is, in fact, a valuable adjunct for long-term survival of corneal grafts not only in those at high risk but notably also in patients at normal risk. This volume opens new pathways towards the successful application of HLA matching to keratoplasty surgeons, experimental and clinical immunologists and cornea bank officers, at the same time acting as an aid to ophthalmologists when finding the basis to adequately advise their keratoplasty patients.

BSAVA Manual of Small Animal Ophthalmology 2nd Edition

    Original price was: $ 109.00.Current price is: $ 72.00.

BSAVA Manual of Small Animal Ophthalmology 2nd Edition

This new Manual builds on the success of the first edition of the BSAVA Manual of Small Animal Ophthalmology. This new edition begins with a clear and concise guide to the examination of the eye. Using the techniques described and the lists of differential diagnoses provided in Appendix I, it should be possible for ocular lesions to be identified and localized with precision. Chapters on imaging techniques (radiography, ultrasonography, CT and MRI) and laboratory investigations follow.New to this edition are chapters on anaesthesia and surgery. Basic principles such as tissue separation and suturing are described and illustrated with specially commissioned drawings.Ocular conditions of dogs and cats are covered in chapters on specific regions, progressing from the adnexa (orbit and periorbital regions, eyelids and lacrimal system) to the eye itself, and thence to the connections between the eye and the brain. Each chapter starts with a short section that considers the relevant anatomy and physiology of that portion of the eye. Following a consideration of diagnostic tests, clinical features are described and illustrated by a wealth of high-quality full-colour images. Medical and surgical management are then discussed for each condition. Conditions of the dog and cat are mostly considered separately, except where there are close similarities. The last two chapters of the Manual briefly describe ocular conditions of rabbits and exotic species (primates, rodents, birds, reptiles and fish), with emphasis on the commoner disorders and those that differ markedly from the conditions already described for the dog and cat.

The Ophthalmology Examinations Review 1st Edition

    Original price was: $ 85.00.Current price is: $ 59.00.

The Ophthalmology Examinations Review 1st Edition

This book is targeted at the final year ophthalmology resident taking the specialist ophthalmology exams, and deals primarily with key topics that are important from the examination viewpoint. Only material that is considered relevant to the exams is covered. The book will help the trainee or resident organize and synthesize knowledge acquired from various other sources or textbooks. While not meant to replace the standard textbooks, it contains enough information to serve as the main revision text nearer the exams. The style of the book is didactic, with questions and short answers. The short answers are designed to be repetitive so as to enhance memory. The answer includes a "model opening statement", followed usually by a classification system to aid organization of facts and then by the bulk of the answer in concise notes. "Exam Tips" are inserted to provide insight into how to answer different types of questions and, when appropriate, a "Clinical Approach" section is also included. Scattered within the text are hundreds of mnemonics to help the candidate in the final stages of preparation for the exams.
