    Narrative Medicine: A Rhetorical Rx

by James Phelan (Author) Narrative Medicine: A Rhetorical Rx rests on the principles that storytelling is central to medical encounters between caregivers and patients and that narrative competence enhances medical competence. Thus, the book's goal is to develop the narrative competence of its reader. Grounded in the rhetorical theory of narrative that Phelan has been constructing over the course of his career, this volume utilizes a three-step method:
    • Offering a jargon-free explication of core concepts of narrative such as character, progression, perspective, time, and space.

    • Demonstrating how to use those concepts to interpret a diverse group of medical narratives, including two graphic memoirs.

    • Pointing to the relevance of those demonstrations for caregiver-patient interactions.
Narrative Medicine: A Rhetorical Rx is the ideal volume for undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare, students in medical and allied health professional schools, and graduate students in the health humanities and social sciences. 99Medical Books is offering all kind of Medical books, Medical Exams Qbank, Audio/Video CD’s and DVD’s and almost all the Medical study material.

Pioneers of the London School of Medicine for Women (1874-1947): Their Contributions and Interwoven Lives (Perspectives on the History of Chemistry)

    by Marelene Rayner-Canham (Author)
This book presents the pioneering role of the women chemists at the London School of Medicine for Women (LSMW). The account is placed within the framework of the long-forgotten background to the founding of this unique Institution, and the individuals whose lives came together to make it happen: Sophia Jex-Blake; Elizabeth Garrett Anderson; Edith Pechey; and Isabel Thorne. The London School of Medicine for Women (LSMW) was the first School in Britain to enable women to gain medical qualifications. Though its pioneering medical role is beginning to be recognized, the Chemistry Department at the School has been totally overlooked. All first-year students at the LSMW had to spend a significant portion of their time taking theoretical and practical chemistry, taught by dedicated women chemistry instructors. In this book, particular attention is given to each of these exceptionally-talented women chemists who found a haven at, and devoted their lives to, the LSMW. This book also covers theenthusiasm of the women medical students which becomes evident through the chemistry prose and poetry which they wrote. This book will appeal to a wide readership interested in the early role of women in science, and it is particularly relevant to those interested in the lives and contributions of pioneering women chemists.

Doctor–patient Communication in Chinese and Western Medicine (Routledge Studies in Language, Health and Culture)

by Ying Jin (Author)Little research is available looking at WM being practiced in Asian countries, and misunderstanding about Eastern medicines such as TCM can result in unwarranted claims and suspicions. This volume contributes to research on doctor– patient communication by exploring the communication behaviors between doctors and older patients who are able to communicate independently in both TCM and WM practiced in mainland China and evaluating patient satisfaction with their medical experiences. The book reports findings and insights from three independent and methodologically diverse studies, drawing on data from 69 real- life medical consultations: 30 from TCM and 39 from WM. Using conversation analysis, the Roter Interaction Analysis System, and both quantitative and qualitative methods, Ying Jin examines the differences between TCM and WM to help reveal the dynamics of doctor– patient interactions, the contextual details, and the impact of the clinical culture on medical communication. This insightful book will appeal to scholars and students from linguistics, language, and health communication as well as medical practitioners interested in doctor– patient communication and intercultural communication. 99Medical Books is offering all kind of Medical books, Medical Exams Qbank, Audio/Video CD’s and DVD’s and almost all the Medical study material.

Nuclear Receptors in Human Health and Disease (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology Book 1390)

    Original price was: $ 147.00.Current price is: $ 122.00.

Nuclear Receptors in Human Health and Disease (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology Book 1390)

by Moray J. Campbell (Editor)This book addresses and dissects the roles and crosstalk mechanisms for the 48 human nuclear receptors (NR) in human health and disease. After a State-of-the-Art introduction by an undisputed and celebrated field leader to provide an overview of the field and its significance, chapters are organized into six sections. The first three sections discuss NR roles in Reproduction & Development, Metabolism and Central Systems. These present to the reader our current understanding of NR signaling in the development and functioning of the reproductive system; the roles in the regulation of energy metabolism; and how NR signaling is more widely integrated into systemic functions from calcium flux to circadian rhythm. The subsequent three sections dissect how aberrant NR functions drive Cancer; how new insights into Genomic Interaction are helping to reveal how NR disruption drives disease; and finally, how Translational Efforts are exploiting this understanding from developing novel NR ligands to establishing how underlying genetic variation impacts NR function.Within these sections the chapters also illustrate emerging understanding of how the epigenome and non-coding genome combine to regulate NR function and impact dysfunction. Increasingly these insights cross-fertilize over cell and disease boundaries and it is unsurprising that NR are being explored in novel and new arenas such as the context of neurological disorders and depression. Thus, there is wide scope for re-purposing of licensed drugs and development of new NR-targeting therapies for a host of conditions and diseases. This unique book brings together many of the leading figures in NR research from across the globe, to discuss emerging roles and their implications for human health and disease. It summarizes the state of the art and shows signposts for future research to further shape this influential field. 99Medical Books is offering all kind of Medical books, Medical Exams Qbank, Audio/Video CD’s and DVD’s and almost all the Medical study material.

Hematopoietic Stem Cells: Keystone of Tissue Development and Regenerative Medicine (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, 1442)

by Meng Zhao (Editor), Pengxu Qian (Editor)
This book renders a comprehensive understanding of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from their embryonic development through adult maintenance to aging, in the studies conducted in zebrafish and mammals. Hematopoiesis provides a paradigm for understanding the development, maintenance, regeneration, aging and malignant transformation of mammalian organs. Sitting at the apex of the hematopoiesis hierarchy tree, HSCs orchestrate their proliferation, self-renewal, and differentiation to produce all the blood cell lineages throughout life, which represents the best example for somatic stem cell studies. In this book, key regulatory mechanisms for HSC self-renewal and differentiation are overviewed in an array of fields including epigenetics, metabolism and microenvironment regulation. It also highlights the HSC heterogeneity and clonal dynamics from the recent advanced single-cell technologies. This book elaborates on the research history of HSC studies and reveals how the insights from HSC studies shed light on their clinic application. It presents great value from the bench to the clinic.

Basic Immunology and Its Clinical Application (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, 1444)

    by Mitsuru Matsumoto (Editor)
This book overviews ongoing and upcoming clinical applications of basic immunology. Recent advances in our knowledge of immunology coupled with new technologies have aided in the development of efficient cancer immunotherapy, as well as the control of emerging microorganisms such as SARS-CoV-2. However, knowledge of basic immunology has not been fully utilized even after the discoveries of immune checkpoint inhibition for cancer immunotherapy and the development of mRNA vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. There is still room for improving the clinical application of basic immunology. The book summarizes the achievements in clinical applications of basic immunology and highlights what can be further extended to make immunology a more practical human science. Basic immunology and its clinical applications are two wheels of the same cart in the immunology field, which aids in the development of more efficient cancer immunotherapy and rapid control of infectious diseases against microorganisms, including new viruses and classical toxoplasmosis. The exploration of ongoing and upcoming applications of basic immunology in this book makes it a useful resource for immunologists, physicians, molecular and genome biologists, bioinformaticians, and students in these fields.

Bayesian Filter Design for Computational Medicine: A State-Space Estimation Framework

    Original price was: $ 44.00.Current price is: $ 27.00.

Bayesian Filter Design for Computational Medicine: A State-Space Estimation Framework

This book serves as a tutorial that explains how different state estimators (Bayesian filters) can be built when all or part of the observations are binary. The book begins by briefly motivating the need for point process state estimation followed by an introduction to the overall approach, as well as some basic background material in statistics that are necessary for the equation derivations that are utilized in subsequent chapters. The subsequent chapters focus on different state-space models and provide step-by-step explanations on how to build the corresponding Bayesian filters. Each of the main chapters that describes a single state-space model also describes the corresponding MATLAB code examples at the end. Descriptions are also provided regarding the code. The code contains both simulated and experimental data examples. All the experimental data examples are taken from real-world experiments. The experiments involve the recording of skin conductance, heartrate and blood cortisol data. A MATLAB toolbox of code examples that cover the different filters covered in the book is included in a companion webpage. The book is primarily intended for graduate students in either electrical engineering or biomedical engineering who will be beginning research in state estimation related to point process data or mixed data (i.e., point processes and other types of observations). The book can also be used by practicing researchers who measure skin conductance and heart rate or pulsatile hormones in their own work (e.g. in psychology). This is an open access book.

Narratives of Women’s Health and Hysteria in the Nineteenth-Century Novel (Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine)

Narratives of Women’s Health and Hysteria in the Nineteenth-Century Novel looks extensively at hysteria discourse through medical and sociological texts and examines how this body of work intersects with important cultural debates to define women’s social, physical, and mental health. The book sketches out prominent shifts in cultural reactions to the idea of diffused agency and the prized model of the interiorized, individual person capable of self will and governance. Melissa Rampelli takes up the work of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy, showing how the authors play with and manipulate stock literary figures to contribute to this dialogue about the causes and cures of women’s hysterical distress.99Medical Books is offering all kind of Medical books, Medical Exams Qbank, Audio/Video CD’s and DVD’s and almost all the Medical study material.

Mathematics in Postmodern American Fiction (Palgrave Studies in Literature, Science and Medicine)

by Stuart J. Taylor (Author) This book delivers an innovative critical approach to better understand U.S. fiction of the information age, and argues that in the last eighty years, fiction has become increasingly concerned with its representations of mathematical ideas, images, and practices. In so doing, this book provides a fuller, transnational account of the place of mathematics in understanding mathematically informed novels. Literature and science studies have acknowledged and situated historical points of cultural crossover; by emphasising mathematics within this larger intellectual context – and not as an unlikely and alien adjunct to post-war culture – this monograph clarifies how mathematically informed postmodern fictions work in a cognate fashion to other fields undergoing structuralist revolutions. This is especially evident in fiction by the key, mathematically-literate Postmodern authors upon whom this study focuses, namely, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, and David Foster Wallace, through which recent the technological revolutions, facilitated by mathematics, manifest in cultural discourse.99Medical Books is offering all kind of Medical books, Medical Exams Qbank, Audio/Video CD’s and DVD’s and almost all the Medical study material.

American Disgust : Racism, Microbial Medicine, and the Colony Within

American Disgust : Racism, Microbial Medicine, and the Colony Within

Examining the racial underpinnings of food, microbial medicine, and disgust in AmericaAmerican Disgust shows how perceptions of disgust and fears of contamination are rooted in the country’s history of colonialism and racism. Drawing on colonial, corporate, and medical archives, Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer argues that microbial medicine is closely entwined with changing cultural experiences of digestion, excrement, and disgust that are inextricably tied to the creation of whiteness. Ranging from nineteenth-century colonial encounters with Native people to John Harvey Kellogg’s ideas around civilization and bowel movements to mid-twentieth-century diet and parenting advice books, Wolf-Meyer analyzes how embedded racist histories of digestion and disgust permeate contemporary debates around fecal microbial transplants and other bacteriotherapeutic treatments for gastrointestinal disease. At its core, American Disgust wrestles with how changing cultural notions of digestion—what goes into the body and what comes out of it—create and impose racial categories motivated by feelings of disgust rooted in American settler-colonial racism. It shows how disgust is a changing, yet fundamental, aspect of American subjectivity and that engaging with it—personally, politically, and theoretically—opens up possibilities for conceptualizing health at the individual, societal, and planetary levels.

    Original price was: $ 236.00.Current price is: $ 199.00.

Essentials of Regenerative Medicine in Interventional Pain Management 2nd edition

Regenerative medicine is an emerging and integral part of interventional pain management and meets definitions of interventional pain management and interventional techniques. Interventional techniques are defined as minimally invasive procedures including, percutaneous precision needle placement, with placement of drugs in targeted areas or ablation of targeted nerves; and some surgical techniques such as laser or endoscopic diskectomy, intrathecal infusion pumps, and spinal cord stimulators, for the diagnosis and management of chronic, persistent, or intractable pain. On the same token, interventional pain management is defined as the discipline of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of pain related disorders principally with the application of interventional techniques in managing subacute, chronic, persistent, and intractable pain, independently or in conjunction with other modalities of treatment. This new edition brings a wide array of information for interventional pain physicians and other physicians practicing regenerative medicine with its applications in managing chronic pain and other disorders. The structure of the book begins with an introduction of the subject, followed by sections on historical context, pathophysiology, applicability of regenerative medicine with its evidence base, anatomy, technical aspects, complications, and precautions for each topic when available and applicable. From across the globe, leading experts in their respective fields contributed chapters on specific topics to present a cogent and integrative understanding of the field of regenerative medicine as applicable for interventional pain physicians. This comprehensive text achieves its goal of providing an evidence-based approach to application of principles of regenerative medicine in managing chronic pain of spinal, neurological, and musculoskeletal origins.

HIV, Gender and the Politics of Medicine: Embodied Democracy in the Global South

by Elizabeth Mills (Author) This book centres on women living with HIV in South Africa who have navigated affective relationships, activist networks, government institutions and global coalitions to transform health policies that govern access to HIV medicines. Drawing on 20 years of ethnographic and policy research in South Africa, Brazil and India, it highlights the value of understanding the embodied and political dimensions of health policy and reveals the networked threads that weave women’s precarity into the governance of technologies and the technologies of governance. It illuminates the entwined histories of health policy evolution, systemic inequality and everyday life and calls for a recognition of the embodied ramifications of democratic politics and global health governance.By integrating medical anthropology with science studies and political theory, this book traces the history of the struggle to access HIV medicines in the Global South and brings it into the present by articulating the lessons learned by activists and policy makers engaged in shaping these vital health policies.99Medical Books is offering all kind of Medical books, Medical Exams Qbank, Audio/Video CD’s and DVD’s and almost all the Medical study material.

Internal Medicine Learning A to Z and 1, 2, 3: A High Reliability Approach to Clinical Knowledge and Standardized Testing Success

This book prepares internal medicine and medicine-pediatrics residents for their internal medicine board examinations. Having a clear and consistent strategy for standardized testing is the key to keeping up with the voluminous material internal medicine residents are expected to retain for standardized tests. This book helps create an “internal calendar” that will set residents up for success. The volume is divided into three sections that exemplify the teaching strategies Dr. Lezama has developed for internal medicine and medicine-pediatric residents over the past 23 years. Section one comprises quick tips for standardized test examinations in internal medicine. This section focuses on the design and format of the test and effective study strategies. Section 2 uses the “A to Z” format for twelve common disciplines in internal medicine, such as cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, psychiatry, and ophthalmology. The third and most comprehensive section forms the scaffolding of Dr. Lezama’s learning strategy. It lays out a detailed three-year, three-days-per-week plan to tackle the often overwhelming amount of information trainees must learn. The target of each day is to learn ten “pearls of knowledge,” which are reiterated and presented in different lights throughout the section to aid retention and understanding.Internal Medicine from A to Z and 1, 2, 3 is a must-have resource for internal medicine residents and third year medical students, as well as faculty members of internal medicine residencies who are actively teaching, coaching, or overseeing residents. Internists who are preparing for their 10-year recertification examination will also find this book useful.

This book is an inquiry into whether what Blake called his ‘visions’ can be attributed to recognizable perceptual phenomena. The conditions identified include visual hallucinations (some derived from migraine aura), and auditory and visual hallucinations derived from several types of synaesthesia. Over a long period of time, Blake has been celebrated as a ‘visionary,’ yet his ‘visions’ have not been discussed. Worrall draws on an understanding of neuroscience to examine both Blake’s visual art and writings, and discusses the lack of evidence pointing towards psychosis or pathological ill-health, thus questioning the rumours pertaining to Blake’s insanity.

  • Obesity and Lung Disease: A Guide to Pathophysiology, Evaluation, and Management (Respiratory Medicine) 2nd edition

This new edition provides a fully updated guide to obesity’s relation to lung disease. Over forty percent of the U.S. population is obese, and obesity is increasing in much of the world. Obesity has a major impact on health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The effects of obesity on lung disease have drawn increasing attention in recent years. Furthermore, the COVID pandemic has dramatically illustrated how obesity affects respiratory disease, constitutes a major risk factor for COVID-19, and presents challenges to pulmonary care in the ICU.Obesity changes physiology, immune and metabolic function, and is associated with changes in diet and the microbiome, all of which combine to have a major impact on the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases. Obesity is thus a risk factor for many respiratory diseases such as asthma, pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolic disease, obstructive sleep apnea and ARDS. Obesity also complicates the management of manyother respiratory diseases and conditions such as COPD, thromboembolic disease, and the care of the critically ill patient. The objectives of this book are three-fold:
    1.  To review how physiological, immune and metabolic factors might contribute to lung disease.
    2.  To discuss the impact of obesity on common lung diseases
    3. To outline important considerations in the management of critically ill obese patients.
There have been major advances in our understanding of the relationship between obesity and lung disease since the first edition in 2013, in addition to the major lessons learned about the importance of obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to the addition of eight new chapters on topics such as, the microbiome, lung transplant, and COVID-19 in the ICU.This is an ideal guide for all clinicians taking care of patients with pulmonary and critical care diseases, as well as basic and translational scientists interested in how obesity affects respiratory health.

    Sex/Gender-Specific Medicine in Clinical Areas

    by Nayoung Kim (Editor)
Sex/gender-specific medicine (SGM) is defined as the practice of medicine based on the understanding that biology and social roles are important in men and women for prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Current research demonstrates differences in disease incidence, symptomatology, morbidity, and mortality depending on sex and gender. Sex/gender-specific medicine is a fundamental aspect of tailored therapy and precision medicine. Therefore, the variables must be considered in medical education and practice as well as in research models ranging from human participants, animals and cells. This concept could be applied in the whole clinical areas from Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Rehabilitation, etc. Nowadays estrogen is known to play a key role in the prevention of colon cancer and in the resistant progression of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, especially in women. This book covers the sex/gender-specific medicine in the whole clinical areas in the adults as well as in the pediatrics. In addition, research results of basic science are also introduced in the colon cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

On Learning to Heal: or, What Medicine Doesn’t Know (Critical Global Health: Evidence, Efficacy, Ethnography)

At thirteen, Ed Cohen was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease—a chronic, incurable condition that nearly killed him in his early twenties. At his diagnosis, his doctors told him that the best he could hope for would be periods of remission. Unfortunately, doctors never mentioned healing as a possibility. In On Learning to Heal, Cohen draws on fifty years of living with Crohn’s to consider how Western medicine’s turn from an “art of healing” toward a “science of medicine” deeply affects both medical practitioners and their patients. He demonstrates that although medicine can now offer many seemingly miraculous therapies, medicine is not and has never been the only way to enhance healing. Exploring his own path to healing, he argues that learning to heal requires us to desire and value healing as a vital possibility. With this book, Cohen advocates reviving healing’s role for all those whose lives are touched by illness.

Roger Bacon and the Incorruptible Human, 1220-1292: Alchemy, Pharmacology and the Desire to Prolong Life (Palgrave Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Medicine)

    by Meagan S. Allen (Author)
This book examines the Franciscan alchemist Roger Bacon’s (1220-1292) interest in the role of alchemy in medicine, and how this interest connected with the thirteenth-century milieu in which he was writing. Though twelfth-century Latin alchemy had largely been concerned with transmuting base metals into noble ones, Bacon believed that the natural principles taught in alchemy would be better used in medicine. In an age where many physicians were theorizing about ways to prevent the effects of aging, Bacon held that combining alchemy and humoral medicine would allow one to extend their life by decades, even centuries. By examining Bacon’s alchemical, medical, and mathematical works, this book argues that Bacon combined a number of sources to create a unique plan for prolonging human life. His understanding of disease and aging was ultimately Galenic in nature, and his understanding of how pharmaceuticals work can be traced back to his mathematical theories, especially that of the multiplication of species. The book provides a new system for organizing Bacon’s alchemically-produced medicines, and explains what Bacon saw as the difference between each, and how they could have different physiological effects. Bacon is situated within the thirteenth-century contexts in which he was writing – that of the university-educated and newly professionalized medical practitioners, who were invested in finding ways to extend human life; and the Franciscan order, with their understanding of the innate goodness of the physical body, the resurrection, and corporeal union with God. Filling a major lacuna in scholarship on the history of medieval medical writings, this book provides vital reading for historians of medicine, pre- and early modern European science, and medieval philosophy and religion.
