Psychological Factors and Cardiovascular Disorders The Role of Stress and Psychosocial Influences

    Original price was: $ 79.00.Current price is: $ 60.00.

Psychological Factors and Cardiovascular Disorders The Role of Stress and Psychosocial Influences

Psychological factors significantly affect the cardiovascular system and play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders. For the past several decades attention to the psychosocial and behavioral factors in cardiovascular disease has increased significantly. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that psychosocial factors contribute significantly to coronary heart disease as evidenced by data relating risk to depression, anxiety, personality factors and character traits, social isolation, and chronic life stress. When psychosocial stresses tend to cluster together, risk for cardiac events is often substantially elevated, equaling or exceeding that associated with standard biomedical risk factors for coronary disease such as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. Understanding the integration of the interactions among multiple psychological and biological factors in the regulation of the cardiovascular system and the development of cardiovascular disorders is an important challenge for future research. This book will contribute to this goal. The contributors to this book are the leading international experts in the field of the relation between psychological processes and cardiovascular disorders. This book will be of interest to physicians, psychologists, mental health counselors, other clinicians, medical and psychology students, medical residents, and the general public.

Cardiovascular Pediatric Critical Illness and Injury

by Derek S. Wheeler (Editor), Hector R. Wong (Editor), Thomas P. Shanley (Editor)
The development of pediatric cardiac surgical programs has had a profound effect on the s- cialty of pediatric critical care medicine, and as a result, the ? eld of pediatric cardiac intensive care is rapidly emerging as a separate subspecialty of pediatric critical care medicine. The ability to provide care for the critically ill child with congenital heart disease clearly separates pediatric intensivists from our adult colleagues. A thorough understanding and knowledge of the unique physiology of the child with congenital heart disease are therefore absolutely crucial for anyone working in the pediatric intensive care unit. Once again, we would like to dedicate this textbook to our families and to the physicians and nurses who provide steadfast care every day in pe- atric intensive care units across the globe. Derek S. Wheeler Hector R. Wong Thomas P. Shanley v Preface to Pediatric Critical Care Medicine: Basic Science and Clinical Evidence The ? eld of critical care medicine is growing at a tremendous pace, and tremendous advances in the understanding of critical illness have been realized in the last decade. My family has directly bene? ted from some of the technological and scienti? c advances made in the care of critically ill children. My son Ryan was born during my third year of medical school. By some peculiar happenstance, I was nearing completion of a 4-week rotation in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU).

  • Cardiac CT Imaging Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Disease 2nd Ed

by Matthew J. Budoff (Editor), Jerold S. Shinbane (Editor)
CT is an accurate technique for assessing cardiac structure and function, but advances in computing power and scanning technology have resulted in increased popularity. It is useful in evaluating the myocardium, coronary arteries, pulmonary veins, thoracic aorta, pericardium, and cardiac masses; because of this and the speed at which scans can be performed, CT is even more attractive as a cost-effective and integral part of patient evaluation. This book collates all the current knowledge of cardiac CT and presents it in a clinically relevant and practical format appropriate for both cardiologists and radiologists. The images have been supplied by an experienced set of contributing authors and represent the full spectrum of cardiac CT. As increasing numbers have access to cardiac CT scanners, this book provides all the relevant information on this modality. This is an extensive update of the previous edition bringing the reader up-to-date with the immense amount of updated content in the discipline.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects Making Sense of the Evidence

Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects Making Sense of the Evidence

by Institute of Medicine (Author), Committee on Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Acute C (Author) Data suggest that exposure to secondhand smoke can result in heart disease in nonsmoking adults. Recently, progress has been made in reducing involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke through legislation banning smoking in workplaces, restaurants, and other public places. The effect of legislation to ban smoking and its effects on the cardiovascular health of nonsmoking adults, however, remains a question.Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects reviews available scientific literature to assess the relationship between secondhand smoke exposure and acute coronary events. The authors, experts in secondhand smoke exposure and toxicology, clinical cardiology, epidemiology, and statistics, find that there is about a 25 to 30 percent increase in the risk of coronary heart disease from exposure to secondhand smoke. Their findings agree with the 2006 Surgeon General's Report conclusion that there are increased risks of coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality among men and women exposed to secondhand smoke. However, the authors note that the evidence for determining the magnitude of the relationship between chronic secondhand smoke exposure and coronary heart disease is not very strong.Public health professionals will rely upon Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects for its survey of critical epidemiological studies on the effects of smoking bans and evidence of links between secondhand smoke exposure and cardiovascular events, as well as its findings and recommendations.
  • Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease

by Arman T. Askari (Editor), A. Michael Lincoff (Editor)Substantial morbidity and mortality remains associated with thrombotic events has stimulated the rapid expansion of the available armamentarium to combat pathologic thrombosis. Pathologic thrombosis plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), ischemic complications of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), venous thromboembolic disease, and embolic complications of arrhythmias and various cardiomyopathies. Written by experts in the field, Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease carefully examines individual and various combinations of the available antithrombotic regimens including fibrinolytic agents, antiplatelet therapies (aspirin, thieneopyridines, glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors), and anticoagulant therapies (unfractionated heparin, low-molecular-weight heparins, direct thrombin inhibitors, and synthetic factor X inhibitors), non-ST-segment elevation (NSTE) ACS and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A detailed overview, Antithrombotic Drug Therapy in Cardiovascular Disease presents the evidence demonstrating the efficacy of available antithrombotic therapies in specific disease states such as atrial fibrillation, cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).

Patient Specific Modeling of the Cardiovascular System Technology Driven Personalized Medicine

Patient Specific Modeling of the Cardiovascular System Technology Driven Personalized Medicine

by Roy C.P. Kerckhoffs (Editor) Peter Hunter Computational physiology for the cardiovascular system is entering a new and exciting phase of clinical application. Biophysically based models of the human heart and circulation, based on patient-specific anatomy but also informed by po- lation atlases and incorporating a great deal of mechanistic understanding at the cell, tissue, and organ levels, offer the prospect of evidence-based diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The clinical value of patient-specific modeling is well illustrated in application areas where model-based interpretation of clinical images allows a more precise analysis of disease processes than can otherwise be achieved. For example, Chap. 6 in this volume, by Speelman et al. , deals with the very difficult problem of trying to predict whether and when an abdominal aortic aneurysm might burst. This requires automated segmentation of the vascular geometry from magnetic re- nance images and finite element analysis of wall stress using large deformation elasticity theory applied to the geometric model created from the segmentation. The time-varying normal and shear stress acting on the arterial wall is estimated from the arterial pressure and flow distributions. Thrombus formation is identified as a potentially important contributor to changed material properties of the arterial wall. Understanding how the wall adapts and remodels its material properties in the face of changes in both the stress loading and blood constituents associated with infl- matory processes (IL6, CRP, MMPs, etc.

Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease

Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease

by Walmor C. DeMello (Editor), Edward D. Frohlich (Editor)Experimental and clinical evidence supports the view that the activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system is involved in cardiovascular pathology including hypertension, heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and atherosclerosis. The present volume describes the intricacies involved in these processes, including the in?uence of prorenin/renin, angiotensin II, angiotensin (1-7), and aldosterone on cardiac and vascular functions as well as their involvement in the generation of cardiovascular diseases. Fundamental aspects like intracellular signaling, regulation of cell volume in the failing heart, and the presence of an intracrine renin angiotensin system are discussed. Moreover, the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor as an important c- ponent of the intracrine renin angiotensin system and as a regulator of extracellular action of angiotensin II is described, reinforcing the view that aldosterone inhibitors are helpful in the treatment of heart failure and hypertension. Let us hope the imp- tant topics included here motivate basic and clinical investigators and contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular diseases. Studies on Studies on Cardiovascular Disorders

by Heinrich Sauer (Editor), Ajay M. Shah (Editor), Francisco R. M. Laurindo (Editor)The role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cardiovascular system is Jan- faced. Whereas low concentrations of ROS are involved in variety of physiological signalling events, oxidative stress resulting from deregulated overproduction of ROS and/or impaired antioxidant defences contributes to cardiovascular disease. The actions of ROS in the cardiovascular system are a fascinating topic, not only for the basic science researcher but also for the clinician who is interested in seeking new therapies for his patients suffering from cardiovascular disease. The current book provides a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms and pathoph- iological settings in which chronic and detrimental oxidative stress arises within the heart and vasculature. The book also considers currently discussed strategies in avoiding chronic redox stress resulting from exposure to risk factors or various cardiovascular interventions. The series starts with an overview by Denise de Castro Fernandes, Diego Bonatto and Francisco Laurindo of redox signaling models that could underlie the dev- opment of redox-associated cardiovascular disorders. The interactions of proteins within signalling cascades with ROS and the regulation of such interactions by the anti-oxidative capacity of the cell are discussed. Rebecca Charles, Joseph Burgoyne and Philip Eaton report on redox-mediated modi cations of proteins under ph- iological and pathophysiological conditions and the variety of post-translational oxidative modi cations that explain redox sensing and signal transduction by proteins at the molecular level. ROS are generated during embryogenesis and may be involved in the proper development of the cardiovascular system.

    Cardiotoxicity of Non Cardiovascular Drugs

Some drugs which are not aimed at treating heart disease have nevertheless been found to have profound effects on heart muscle. Cardiotoxicity is one of the major forms of toxicity seen in drugs and it accounts for most drug recalls and delays experienced in regulatory approvals. In recent years a number of non-cardiac blockbuster drugs such as terfenadine have been withdrawn from major markets because of cardiotoxicity concerns, while other drugs have either been withdrawn prior to marketing or required labelling changes that significantly restricted their use. In Cardiotoxicity of Non-Cardiovascular Drugs international experts describe the molecular mechanisms and clinical read-outs of cardiac events induced by a broad variety of noncardiovascular drugs. Particular emphasis is paid to the preclinical screening of drug cardiotoxicity. Topics include:
    •  metabolic targets of cardiotoxicity
    • regulatory aspects
    • translating molecular mechanisms into clinical trials
    • structure-activity relationships in arrhythmias by antihistamines and psychoactive drugs
    • cardiovascular toxicity of antitumor drugs
    • cardiovascular toxicities of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
    • cardiovascular toxicities of antiretroviral therapies
Cardiotoxicity of Non-Cardiovascular Drugs is an essential guide to this important area of drug development. It will find a place on the bookshelves of researchers, regulators and students in medicinal chemistry, drug development, pharmacology, pharmacy and cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular MRI in Congenital Heart Disease

by Shankar Sridharan (Author), Gemma Price (Author), Oliver Tann (Author), Marina Hughes (Author), Vivek Muthurangu (Author), Andrew M. Taylor (Author)
The last 10 years has seen explosive expansion of the number of centres performing cardiov- cular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. The majority of this expansion has been in the ? eld of adult ischaemic imaging, but congenital heart disease remains one of the main indications for CMR. Importantly, the greatly improved survival of patients with congenital heart disease gives us a burgeoning adult population living with the sequelae of the disease (grown-up c- genital heart disease – GUCH). Without previous experience or formal training, the interpretation of CMR images of patients with congenital heart disease can be dif? cult. The main aim of this book is to create a portable resource that offers ef? cient access to high-quality MR (and where appropriate, CT) images of the common congenital and structural heart abnormalities. We hope that by prov- ing key images for each condition and a clear interpretation of the MR appearances, we will improve the reader’s understanding of the conditions, facilitate their interpretation of images and optimise the planning of the imaging protocols during their own practice of congenital CMR. As with any publication from a single institution, the contents of this book represent our own practice. We have not written a de? nitive or exhaustive description of the conditions.
