    Exercise Testing in Cardiology

A century of technical progress, critical analyses, and clinical comparisons have shaped exercise testing in cardiology as we know it today: a simple, noninvasive physiological test that yields irreplaceable information on an individual’s physical capacity and ischemic risk. Increasingly prescribed, exercise testing is one of the mostly commonly used medical examinations worldwide. It is both diagnostically and prognostically valuable, and is optimized when combined with myocardial perfusion imaging.. Its indications are broadened every day and there is a good chance that each and every one of us has had, or will one day have, an exercise test. This short and precise book follows a pragmatic and hands-on approach to help physicians who prescribe exercise testing to identify its indications, advantages, and limits. And in interpreting the findings they will find invaluable help in the section entitled: What should be done with exercise test results? As for those who perform exercise tests―whether beginners or experts―they will find in these pages precious details and facts that can be profitably employed in their everyday practice.

CT of the Heart (Contemporary Medical Imaging) 2nd Edition

    Original price was: $ 98.00.Current price is: $ 70.00.

CT of the Heart (Contemporary Medical Imaging) 2nd Edition

This book is a comprehensive and richly-illustrated guide to cardiac CT, its current state, applications, and future directions. While the first edition of this text focused on what was then a novel instrument looking for application, this edition comes at a time where a wealth of guideline-driven, robust, and beneficial clinical applications have evolved that are enabled by an enormous and ever growing field of technology. Accordingly, the focus of the text has shifted from a technology-centric to a more patient-centric appraisal. While the specifications and capabilities of the CT system itself remain front and center as the basis for diagnostic success, much of the benefit derived from cardiac CT today comes from avant-garde technologies enabling enhanced visualization, quantitative imaging, and functional assessment, along with exciting deep learning, and artificial intelligence applications. Cardiac CT is no longer a mere tool for non-invasive coronary artery stenosis detection in the chest pain diagnostic algorithms; cardiac CT has proven its value for uses as diverse as personalized cardiovascular risk stratification, prediction, and management, diagnosing lesion-specific ischemia, guiding minimally invasive structural heart disease therapy, and planning cardiovascular surgery, among many others. This second edition is an authoritative guide and reference for both novices and experts in the medical imaging sciences who have an interest in cardiac CT.

Practical Signal and Image Processing in Clinical Cardiology

by Jeffrey J Goldberger (Editor), Jason Ng (Editor)Modern signal and image acquisition systems used in the field of cardiology acquire, analyze, and store data digitally. Surface electrocardiography, intra-cardiac electrogram recording, echocardiograms, x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography are among the modalities in the cardiology field where signal processing is applied. Digital signal processing techniques allow us to automate many of the analyses that had previously been done manually with greater precision, accuracy and speed, as well as detect features and patterns in data that may be too subtle to observe by eye. As more cardiologists are becoming more reliant on such technology, a basic understanding of digital signals and the techniques used to extract information from these signals are required.

by Thach Nguyen (Editor), Dayi Hu (Editor), Moo-hyun Kim (Editor), Tak Kwan (Editor), Cindy Grines (Editor), Shigeru Saito (Editor) Medical decisions are made on the basis of critical thinking and clinical judgments are based on the relevancy of the collected data. Medical decisions and clinical judgments are the results of the long thought process generated from formal learning, data from guidelines and practice standards, experience, an understanding of the incidence of disease in the population that the patient represents, and the likelihood of a disease being present in a specific patient. This book introduces and encourages the concept of evidence-based patient care. This work presents the ideology and methodology of critical thinking and also the available evidence, management and cost effectives across the field. Evidence-Based Cardiology is aimed at any clinician who encounters a cardiac patient from the Clerk to the Internist to the Practicing Physician, encouraging disease management decisions to be based on the highest level of evidence.

Environmental Cardiology Pollution and Heart Disease

    Original price was: $ 171.00.Current price is: $ 120.00.

Environmental Cardiology Pollution and Heart Disease

Although it is widely recognized that environmental factors such as smoking, diet, exercise, and socioeconomic status affect the risk of cardiovascular disease, recent work showing the effects of other environmental factors provides a more complete assessment of the situation. This view has emerged from three developments. Firstly, there has been a sudden explosion in the prevalence of diabetes and obesity which indicates a strong environmental component. Secondly, there is an accumulation of evidence suggesting that most cases of these diseases could be prevented by healthy lifestyle choices. Finally, studies have shown that exposure to environmental pollutants has a significant effect on heart disease risk. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive account of the effects of pollutants on heart disease and to integrate this area of research within the overall theme of environmental cardiology. The introductory chapter outlines the effects of different aspects of the environment on heart disease and provides a context for the discussion that follows. Subsequent chapters give an overview of the effects of particulate matter and discuss the epidemiological studies supporting the link. The book then goes on to cover the effects of pollution on different aspects of cardiovascular disease (hypertension, stroke, heart failure, ischemic heart disease and atherogenesis). Because of a close association between diabetes and heart disease, a discussion of the effects of particulate matter on diabetes is also included. Later chapters discuss the effects of individual pollutants such as vehicular emissions, metals and aldehydes. A review on manufactured nanoparticles is incorporated because these particles represent an important new threat to cardiovascular health. The understanding that emerges from this monograph suggests that we must be more alert to the effects of the environment and develop strategies that target, not only the diseased individual, but also the unhealthy, disease-causing environment. It is essential reading for cardiologists, epidemiologists, urban planners and pollution control specialists.

    Sports Cardiology Casebook

by Antonio Pelliccia (Editor) Comparatively little is known about the risk of sudden death associated with exercise in young competitive athletes, and whether the benefits of sports activity outweigh the hazards of exercise-related fatal events is a clinical dilemma. This is only a small part of the story, however, as there are considerable effects of exercise whether it be at a competitive level or on a ‘leisure’ level on patients of all ages. This in itself is of massive importance to the cardiac patient population as exercise is a key component of effective recovery and recommended as central in the prevention of much cardiac disease.

Primary Angioplasty in Acute Myocardial Infarction

    Original price was: $ 220.00.Current price is: $ 180.00.

Primary Angioplasty in Acute Myocardial Infarction

by James E. Tcheng (Editor) The past 50 years have witnessed a breathtaking evolution in the approaches to the patient with an acute ST elevation myocardial infarction. In the 1960s, the now commonplace cardiac intensive care unit was but a nascent idea. Without much to offer the patient but weeks of absolute bed rest, substantial morbidity and high rates of mortality were the norm. Just 30 years ago, seminal discoveries by DeWood and colleagues suggested that the culprit was plaque rupture with thrombosis, not progressive luminal compromise. Subsequent fibrinolysis- based strategies resulted in a halving of the mortality of acute myocardial infarction. With the introduction of balloon angioplasty in the late 1970s, a few interventional cardiologists braved the question: why not perform emergency angioplasty as a primary reperfusion strategy? Indeed, reports of successful reperfusion via balloon angioplasty appeared (mostly in local newspapers) as early as 1980. Despite being thought of as heretical by mainstream cardiology, these pioneers nonetheless persevered, proving the benefit of ‘‘state-of-the-art’’ balloon angioplasty compared with ‘‘state-of-t- art’’ thrombolytic therapy in a series of landmark trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine in March of 1993. Publication of the first edition of Primary Angioplasty in Acute Myocardial Infarction in 2002 to some extent anticipated the widespread acceptance of primary percutaneous coronary intervention as the standard of care. Since then, in all respects, the evolution of emergency percutaneous revascularization has only accelerated. The universal replacement of balloon angioplasty with stent implantation was clearly one key.
